Écrire avec Schumann

Can words trap Robert Schumann, or is he as elusive as the Papillons of his Op. 2? At times impetuous like Florestan, at times delicate like Eusebius, the composer in any case haunts literature and the arts, from Odilon Redon to Peter Härtling, by way of Fernand Khnopff, Lesya Ukrainka, Marcel Proust, André Gide, Romain Rolland, Roland Barthes, and so many others. Dedicated to a wandering as well as brilliant figure, this volume could only be placed under the sign of interrogation, analyzing the questions Schumann poses to those who confront him: questions of criticism and reception, first; of poetics, next; of ethos, also; of life or death, finally.

Sylvain Ledda is a professor of French literature at the University of Rouen Normandy. A specialist in Romanticism, particularly Musset, he has also dedicated works and editions to Dumas and Delphine de Girardin. His research focuses on the links between literary history and cultural history.

Augustin Vœgele is an associate professor (professeur agrégé) of modern literature and holds a PhD in French literature (University of Haute-Alsace). A specialist in Jules Romains and André Gide, he is the author of three essays and co-edited the volumes Écrire avec Chopin and Écrire avec Beethoven published by Honoré Champion.
