One can vaguely make out floors and something like apartments, with their numbers, their families of various conditions, their wallpapers, their photographs, their holidays in the Alps and their terraces overlooking the Atlantic, the ordinary satisfactions and the complications of their lives. The condition of blue is not the same depending on the place it occupies in the scale of beings, of shades, and of beliefs. The humblest are content with the lower floors, with their greasy wallpaper and their graffiti: they hardly climb higher than the rooftops bristling with antennas. The happiest sometimes soar in a flawless azure and cast upon human cities that beautiful panoramic gaze which once amused the gods. […]
