There are few friendships that do not, at some point in their development, threaten to turn sour. Yet, between correspondents, acrimonious letters can only be exchanged if the antagonism retains even a hint of friendly attachment. It is therefore not so much hatred as specifically epistolary and literary enmities that the contributions in this volume analyse. Could the literary enemy constitute a sort of alter ego? Is taking one’s adversary to task not an effective way of honing one’s style? Does the palpable animosity in the letter-writer’s correspondence find concrete expression in the writer’s work?
These are the questions that guide the exploration of spiteful or at least unfriendly correspondence, drawn from a corpus of study belonging to the post-Romantic era.

This volume brings together 16 contributions from international researchers on a subject that has received little attention in translation studies to date: the translation of popular literature and popular science. Due to their popular appeal, popular science and popular literature have traditionally suffered from a lack of recognition in academic research, despite having a very wide readership.
Today, popular science is part of a recognised and encouraged approach, which involves disseminating research findings beyond specialist circles. It involves simplifying more specialised discourse through a process of rewriting, or even intralinguistic translation.
General fiction shares the same objectives of wide dissemination and accessibility, without, however, involving rewriting from more specialised forms. Popular novels, paraliterature and bestsellers are all terms that attempt to define an elusive category, destined to evolve over the course of history and sometimes to canonise the serials of yesteryear. The criterion for inclusion in our analyses is the public success of these works, which allows us to broaden the scope to include literary texts that do not necessarily have a ‘popular’ vocation — a vocation that is, moreover, difficult to identify — but which reach a wide audience.
The book is divided into five main sections: Theoretical Approaches, Historical Approaches, Popular Science, General Fiction, and Translation Experiences. Readers will find theoretical reflections, case studies from across Europe, and insights from two translators of literary bestsellers.

Friendship in Travel Literature: Uses and Representations (18th–20th Centuries)
This book is the first to examine the role and portrayals of friendship in travel literature. Drawing on a body of work spanning the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, it combines a historical perspective with a literary analysis of travel writings and examines their poetic style in order to better analyse how friendship on a journey is constructed in and through writing. Exploring literary and pictorial works ranging from Le Président de Brosses to Ella Maillart, it analyses the relationships the traveller forges with a spatial as well as cultural otherness, and the way in which they attempt to come to terms with the foreign, either by describing it to friends and family or by forming friendly relationships with its inhabitants.

Correspondence between literature and politics

The Throbbing of the Word: The Figure of the Sphere and Its Analogues in the Poetry of Richard Crashaw by Fabrice Schultz
Based on an unpublished translation of his poems, this study combines literature, intellectual and cultural history, the history of science, and theology, focusing on the most European of seventeenth-century English poets: Richard Crashaw.
Richard Crashaw (1612–1649), an Anglican writer who converted to Catholicism, published his poems at a time when scientific discoveries were questioning the ability of the sphere to represent humanity and the world. By situating these poems within their scientific, theological, and cultural context, and by offering new translations, Fabrice Schultz highlights this writer’s attachment to geocentrism and his call to rise from Earth toward Heaven in order to unite with God.
