« Presque jamais autrement »
The ILLE is delighted to announce the publication, by Bleu et Jaune, of the novel by Ukrainian writer Maria Matios, *Presque jamais autrement* (Almost Never Otherwise), translated into French by Nikol Dziub, an associate member of the laboratory.
Winner of the 2017 Book of the Year Award in Ukraine, Presque jamais autrement is a family saga set in the Ukrainian Carpathians at the beginning of the 20th century. The book highlights the intense passions of ordinary people, against the backdrop of a region ravaged by wars and successive occupations.
In a remarkable style, masterfully weaving together the narrative threads, Maria Matios delivers a tale—often cruel—in which brothers kill one another over meagre plots of land, in which daring women defy, though not always challenge, the law of men who are at times virtuous and courageous, at times cowardly and powerless, and in which witchcraft seems to wield real power.
