This volume brings together 16 contributions from international researchers on a subject that has received little attention in translation studies to date: the translation of popular literature and popular science. Due to their popular appeal, popular science and popular literature have traditionally suffered from a lack of recognition in academic research, despite having a very wide readership.
Today, popular science is part of a recognised and encouraged approach, which involves disseminating research findings beyond specialist circles. It involves simplifying more specialised discourse through a process of rewriting, or even intralinguistic translation.
General fiction shares the same objectives of wide dissemination and accessibility, without, however, involving rewriting from more specialised forms. Popular novels, paraliterature and bestsellers are all terms that attempt to define an elusive category, destined to evolve over the course of history and sometimes to canonise the serials of yesteryear. The criterion for inclusion in our analyses is the public success of these works, which allows us to broaden the scope to include literary texts that do not necessarily have a ‘popular’ vocation — a vocation that is, moreover, difficult to identify — but which reach a wide audience.

The book is divided into five main sections: Theoretical Approaches, Historical Approaches, Popular Science, General Fiction, and Translation Experiences. Readers will find theoretical reflections, case studies from across Europe, and insights from two translators of literary bestsellers.
