Stylistics on the Frontiers

COLLOQUE INTERNATIONAL

Université de Haute-Alsace (Mulhouse)
13-14 novembre 2015
Organisé par l’ILLE (EA 4363)

Stylistics has always crossed disciplinary borders. Its many configurations involve, for example, (1) stylistics and rhetoric; (2) stylistics and philology; (3) stylistics and narratology; (4) stylistics and discourse analysis; as well as (5) stylistics and linguistics. The various forms of stylistics reflect its interdisciplinary nature, as we can see in terms such as rhetorical stylistics (Fahnestock); critical stylistics (Jeffries); cognitive stylistics (Semino & Culpeper); corpus stylistics (Wynne); feminist stylistics (Mills); and performance stylistics (Hoover, Culpeper, & O’Halloran). At the very heart of these configurations are choices about methods and materials, choices that can vary from one country to another, from one language to another. Therefore, this two-day international conference aims to reflect theoretically on the interdisciplinary nature of stylistics, and on the place of stylistics in France, England,  Germany, and Switzerland. Because stylistics crosses borders, it is fitting to host this conference in Alsace, a cultural crossroads on the French, Swiss, and German borders. We invite Power Point presentations that are just 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes for questions and answers. Presentations may be in French, English or German (with Power Point slides in English please if at all possible). The intention is to collect written versions of the presentations later on and then publish them in a a single edited volume in English.
